I think making serendipty work *for* you (if that isn't a complete contradiction in terms) is one of the most important drivers in any sucessful career...

The music and library link is an interesting one - I come from a musical background so I wonder if I'll end up doing something involving both at some stage.

Yes, I think it was months before I got serious about it but your post definitely set the cogs turning!

I think you'd have a lot to say about your library roots already, but hey, whenever you feel ready for it :)

I didn't know it was me that got you thinking about this career seriously all those years ago!

Funny that I didn't manage the traineeship route in the end after all - it's turned out for the best though. It's been so interesting reading everybody's roots/routes, but I don't feel quite qualified to do a post of my own yet (probably cos I'm not - haha ;) Hopefully in a couple of years.

Thanks Tony, those are great suggestions!

Unsure how useful Mosaic is for us, as I expect all the courses in my institution are under the 'Music' UCAS code so stuff borrowed on other courses may be of limited relevance, but could still be worth a shot. Will have to make time to play around, and may well take you up on that offer :)

A couple of other ways of generating references come to mind:
1) take the ISBN of a book on a current reading list and then look up 'people who bought this also bought that' recommendations using the Amazon wbservice;
2) use the Mosaic api mentioned on @daveyp's blog to do the following:
a) do an isbn lookup to find the courses that associated with people who have borrowed that book from an academic library;
b) then take the course codes and use the other API call to look up what other books were borrowed by people on those courses.
3) if 2, submit the solution to the developer competition and claim your prize :-)

tony
PS happy to help if i can....

Hi Edith,

Just read your blog entry and see that you mention that you would like to use a spellchecker in your PAC. I recently (well, about a year ago!) implemented one (yahoo spelling suggestions), which is really easy to plug into your OPAC as long as you have access to the HTML and don't mind a bit of extra javascript in your OPAC. Here's an example: http://tinyurl.com/m5ersa

If you're interested I can speak to you at mashedlib 09!

Great post Edith, thanks for such a useful review.

I still haven't used Spotify yet, I keep saying I will give it a go and I'm sure at some point soon I'll get round to it!

Will be interested to see whether it's feasible in an academic library sense, I'm sure some of our Music students would find it useful.
